These kids spent their Christmas break building video games

Sioux Falls Christian now has 30 video game developers, and that's just the start.

All kids should know how to build video games.
About four months ago, Code Bootcamp was approached by Sioux Falls Christian to run our Gaming Bootcamp over the Christmas break at their elementary school. Principal Matt Covey is passionate about bringing in more STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs to his school, and we were so happy to accommodate.

Code Bootcamp agreed to host a 3-day Gaming Bootcamp for 4th & 5th graders over the Christmas break. We thought we would have 15 kids sign up so we lined up one facilitator - Gerald Oudman - the technology assistant guy and soccer coach.
That quickly grow to 30 kids so we had to add a second facilitator - Ivan Voss - the high school government teacher.
Over our 3-day bootcamp, we built and modified three different games - a blocks game, a break-out game and one we called Bad-Birds (like Angry Birds.) The kids absorbed the material and ran with it. The variations were amazing, as you can see from this video we shoot.
Our mentors, mostly high school students, just went from one kid to next helping them add new features that we never would have thought about. Pretty much everything was shooting lasers, blowing up or spawning bizarre character to eat everything.
Everyone had a great time. It was a lot of work to pull off but it was so worth the effort. We can't wait to do it again.
"This is better than Christmas," overheard on day two.
This summer we will be hosting additional Gaming Bootcamps. If your kids missed out on this one, you can join us on the next time. Before we make any public announcements of our next bootcamp, we will email out mailing list first so make sure you are signed up. Our Sioux Falls Christian bootcamp sold out between the hours of midnight and 8am, so make sure you are on our list of you will probably miss out again.
Feel free to contact us if you want us to host a special bootcamp, we'd love to hear from you.
